The Naval Battle of Roodstad was a battle that took place near Roodstad on 6 April 1758, between the Libertan and Brunanter navy. The battle resulted in an inconclusive result; though the Libertan navy was defeated Brunant lost several ships and most others were damaged, leaving the navy crippled and largely docked at Roodstad until the end of the war.
Background[]

Roodstad port, 1755
At the end of 1757 the Brunanter land forces were split up and mostly holed up in beseiged cities and fortresses all along the coast. These cities had not fallen, in part due to other pressing engagements in Europe, but as well due to the supply of these defensive positions from the Brunanter Royal Navy.
In order put this at check, the Libertan navy tried to engage the Brunanter navy throughout 1757 and 1758 with little success. After the fall of Grijzestad in Siege of Grijzestad, Roodstad became the base of the navy and with the Red Castle guarding the port, as well as other minor fortifications, it became a near-impregnable and heavily-defended position. The mouth of the port became known as "Hell's Gate". Few Libertan-Brunanter engagements took place, and finally in the spring of 1758 it was decided to engage the Brunanter navy just after leaving port.

In popular culture[]
Since 1957, the anniversary of the battle is celebrated as the navy's day in Brunant.
A partly fictionalized account of the battle forms the plot of the 2015 movie Hell's Gate. Oliver Hewton is making a miniature park that has a lake with the battle and the ships, MiniBrunant.
