Jazinta Benaid (née Van Ravels) (born 22 March 1980) is a Brunanter politician who is the current leader of the Social Democrats. She was last Minister for External Affairs in 2018. Benaid was one of the youngest ministers in government and her party when first elected.

Early life[]

Benaid was born Jazinta Van Ravels in 1980. Her father, Nico Van Ravels was a well-known singer in the 1970s. Her mother died in 1982, and she was raised by her father. She lived in The Hague from 1982 to 1985.

She studied history at Grijzestad University from 1998 to 2002, with a focus on art.

Benaid was a longtime worker at a Grijzestad art gallery in her youth, and during her early years in government still found time to assist the gallery in events. She was heavily involved with the Department of Cultural Affairs throughout the 2000s, as a member of SDP. In 2009, she was elected to the House of Representatives.

Following re-election in 2013, she was appointed as Minister of Cultural Affairs in the Wostor government.

In 2018, she was Minister of External Affairs, and was widely tipped to one day succeed Pieter Van Buskirk. Her period as minister was short, as the Van Buskirk government fell in September 2018.

During the 2018 Social Democratic leadership election, she was one of the three candidates; she came ahead in the first round and then won the second to make her the party leader. She will lead the party into the 2019 general election.

Personal life[]

She married Brunanter cardiologist Karim Benaid in 2009.
