Judith Butler

Judith Butler (born 19 July 1954) is a Brunanter jurist and currently the judge of the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Brunant. Before her election, Butler was President of the Constitutional Court and a professor of human rights law at the Grijzestad University.

Biography[]

Born in Carrington, Butler studied law at the Grijzestad University, but also holds a master's degree from the Paul Cézanne University School of Law in France and a doctorate in European law from the Grijzestad University. She is fluent in Dutch, Barzuna, English and French.

Legal career[]

Bulter worked as a legal consultant for the Mathers Financial Group and Agovar, and gained expertise in the fields of European Union law.

She became a secretary of the Constitutional Court in 1994 and a judge in the English linguistic group of the Court in 1999. In 2006, she was appointed President of the Constitutional Court, succeeding Willem Van Eisner. She was the first President not to be Vice-President first since the appointment of two other candidates, who were presidents of the linguistic groups, was blocked because of their lack of language skills.

In 2011, Butler was elected as Brunant's judge in the European Court of Human Rights by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. As President of the Constitutional Court, she was succeeded by Egbert Claes. Her nine-year term of office will end in 2020.

Academic career[]

In the 1990s and 2000s, Butler was as a professor of human rights law at the Grijzestad University. She has a dozen publications in her name, mainly in the field of European institutional law and humanitarian law. She is also a visiting professor at several European universities and a member of various academic institutions.
