Echo class submarine

An Echo-class submarine.

The K-126 incident was an incident involving the Soviet submarine K-126 and the Realmarine in April 1975. The K-126 was the only submarine of the Echo-class not to be decommissioned.

Spotting a foreign vessel off Carrington headed east. The navy sent out a patrol boat, R.S. Swantown, to investigate. Heading in the general direction of the ship (near Drenthe) the Swantown discovered a surfaced Echo-class Soviet submarine.

The K-126 signaled to the Swantown that they were having reactor issues and requested that a larger vessel be sent to assist the submarine. Swantown contacted navy headquarters and they prepared to send a ship, but the K-126 suddenly signaled they were having "major issues" and the sub went down, apparently having flooded and sank.

It is widely believed in Brunant that the ship did not sink and was potentially involved in an espionage mission.

The incident formed part of the plot for television series The Network.
