Tonis

Michael Tonis (1st August 1940, Middleton - 11th May 2017, Koningstad) was a Brunanter football coach and former player. He is widely considered to be one of the best Brunanter footballers of his age and all time.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Tonis was born in Middleton to a middle-class family. His parents sent him off in 1947 to live with a rich aunt in Chester. There, he joined second division club Chester Sports Club in 1958, helping to promote them to the First division in 1960. Tonis was quickly signed on by Grijzestad Strijders in 1962.

Grijzestad[]

Tonis would quickly become one of Grijzestad's stars. He helped them win back-to-back league titles in 1963 and 1964, including scoring 4 goals in a 6-1 routing of Chester. He sat out most of the 1965-66 season due to injuries but returned the following season and was instrumental in their championship win in 1967. He played for Grijzestad until 1972 when he was transferred to FC Drenthe for a fee of Th. 10,000,000. The Strijders had a change in management and its new bosses wanted him back, so he was re-signed for Th. 15,000,000 in 1973. Tonis woud play for the Strijders until 1975.

National team[]

Tonis was called up to the Brunanter national team in 1962 and played until 1973. Tonis was instrumental in a 5-3 win over Monaco in the World Football Championship in 1966. He led Brunant to the WFC semifinal in 1968 and scored the opening goal in a 2-2 draw with Brunei. In the penalties, Tonis scored his though Brunant eventually lost.

Coaching[]

Tonis coached Hogeberg-Liga team Oceana Grijzestad from 1979-1981 and led them to the league title in 1980. In 1984 he was made coach for the national team and led them to second place in the WFC 1988, losing out to Faroe Islands 2-0 in the final. He was fired shortly after.

In 1992 he was hired as St. Marks Koningstad's coach and in the 1991-92 season finished second in the 1. Liga. In 1992-93 St. Marks finished fourth and in 1993-94 he was sacked in November after dismal results.

In 2004 he would be hired again for the coaching job at St. Marks, but he could only take the club to second place in 2007 and was promptly fired.

In 2017, Tonis died of a stroke in his home in Koningstad, at the age of 76.
