Simon Denis Versten, CD (22 July 1975 in Drenthe) is a former footballer who played for the Brunant national football team and most notably Kemburg City in Kemburg.
Biography[]
Early career[]
Versten started out as an FC Drenthe player, given he was born in Drenthe. He joined the club's youth ranks in 1990. Despite being at his childhood team he was not given many first team opportunities and was loaned out to Sterren Koningstad in the Cape Cross League. While he was talented he was quite unproven and clubs were unwilling to pay the large fee Drenthe demanded.
Kemburg City[]
In the summer of 1996 Versten joined Kemburg City F.C. in Kemburg, where he would become a longtime player. At Kemburg he would become one of the best strikers in the league and top scorer in the 1997-98 and 1999-2000 seasons. In his first season at the club he won the Kemburger First Division, as well as in 2001-02 and 2006-07. Versten would receive fewer caps after 2006 and in 2008, he was released from the club after his contract expired.
Standard FC[]
In January 2009 he joined Standard FC and was influential in making the team one of the best in the Second League. He retired in the summer of 2010.
National team[]
Despite having a good career in Kemburg, Versten was initially rarely selected as he had to contend with the more skilled Karim Zenadi, Oliver Jordans and Miquel Campdegall for a spot. He played for Brunant's U20 team until 1996 but received his first senior cap in 1999. Versten was part of the squad that won WFC 2000, though he was unable to score a goal in the tournament.
Versten scored on twelve occasions for the national team and was given 25 caps. Despite this most of his goals came later in his career, with his only hat-trick occuring in a game versus Pintona at the age of 31. He received his final cap in 2008, in a friendly versus Italy.
Personal life[]
Versten married Laura Carbonell, daughter of actor Martin Carbonell. They have two children, Charlotte (1999) and Philippe (2003). Because Laura is also the daughter of Elisabeth Kaufman, Versten's children are great-great-great-grandchildren of King Johan I and so they are in the line of succession to the Brunanter throne.
