Vandelet Quay is a street and wharf in Koningstad, named after philosopher Hendrik Vandelet. The quay is entirely pedestrian, though it is crossed by both the Adrianbrug and Marten Bridge.

History[]

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the whole north bank of the Dortmund River was lined with merchants' store-houses and warehouses on a quay. These were in use until the early 19th century, falling itno decay in the subsequent years. In the 1910s, the whole of Vandelet Quay was renovated after years of decay. The old warehouses were either demolished or re-faced and converted to become apartments. The quay itself was paved and by the 1920s there were shops and restuarants on it, with electric lighting installed in 1931.

Vandelet Quay has become somewhat of a tourist attraction, due to it's stunning riverside views and as the city's only pedestrian shopping street. In the 1970s the quay was extended into the Newtown quarter by renovating an old alleyway beside the river.
